Toxic Mold and Travel: How to Protect Your Health Away From Home with Dr. Amy Myers

Podcast Duration : 56:22

Podcast Publish Date : 8/18/26

I am thrilled to bring you this week’s solo episode, where I share the exact mold-safe travel protocol I use to protect my health away from home. On a recent trip to Nosara, Costa Rica, with my daughter, Elle, I encountered mold in our hotel room. It was a reminder that even a beautiful, restorative trip can bring unexpected challenges when you are sensitive to mold, fragrances, or environmental exposures.

I know firsthand how much mold illness, autoimmunity, and PTSD can make your world feel smaller. There was a time when even a short flight felt impossible for me. But healing does not have to mean giving up travel, adventure, or the memories you want to make with the people you love. It means learning how to prepare, knowing what supports your body, and having a plan when things do not go exactly as expected.

In this episode, I walk you through how I choose a lower-risk hotel, what I pack to keep my belongings contained, the personal tools I use to support sleep and safety, and what I do when I get home after a possible exposure. If you have ever worried about a musty hotel room, a disrupted health routine, or a travel setback, I made this episode for you.

What I Cover In This Episode

How I Choose a Lower-Risk Place to Stay

When I travel to a humid destination or the beach, I look for newer hotels first. I prefer simple rooms with hard floors, fewer fabrics and decorative items, and the ability to change rooms if something does not feel right. Before I arrive, I call ahead to request a fragrance-free room, feather-free bedding, and a refrigerator for the food and routine-supporting items I bring with me. I also inspect the room before moving all of my luggage upstairs. Hotels are not perfect, but they often give you more options if you need to address a concern quickly.

How I Pack to Keep My Belongings Protected

A hard-shell suitcase is one of my most important travel tools because it is easier to wipe down when I return home. I pack clothing in large sealed slider bags, which keeps everything organized and contained if I encounter a musty or moldy space. I also travel with inexpensive cotton clothing, my own unscented personal-care products, a compact cooler, and a reusable water bottle. These small choices help me avoid relying on products, materials, or food options that may not work for my body.

The Travel Tools That Help Me Keep My Routine

Travel affects sleep, hydration, meals, digestion, and your exposure to other people. I bring simple tools that make a hotel room more restful, including a sleep mask, earplugs, blackout stickers for electronic lights, curtain clips, and my own pillow. I also pack snacks and electrolytes and use a personal immune, digestive, and mold-support routine. In this episode, I share how I use products such as Immune Synergy, Immune IG, Leaky Gut Revive, electrolytes, Paleo Protein, Acid Restore HCL Complete, Enzyme Complete, Mag Move, acetylated glutathione, Liver Support, and Charcoal Binder Complete as part of that protocol. On this particular Costa Rica trip, however, I accidentally left the supplements at home, so I also explain the steps I took once I returned.

What I Do After a Possible Mold Exposure

When I arrived home from Costa Rica, I wiped down my hard-shell suitcase before bringing it into the house. I then sorted the items that had been exposed, washed what I could, and replenished my carry-on so it would be ready for the next trip. This is not about being afraid of the world. It is about having practical habits that help you recover your footing when an exposure happens. I still had an incredible trip with my daughter, and I was reminded that mold sensitivity does not have to determine what is possible for your life.
